Green Street Grill

Where:  Green Street Grill, Cambridge, MA
When: Thursday, 22 January 2009
Who:  Me, Andreas, Chris, Kristin

Andreas and Chris used to work together, and usually get together without their wives for beers every few months.  Last night, Kristin decided she wanted t go out too, so they got a babysitter and asked us to join them for dinner. Since we’ve been on this healty eating kick, we haven’t really been out to dinner, so this was a nice excuse to go out for a nice dinner.

We decided to meet at the Green Street.  This is a restaurant that was reopened about three years ago by a local Cambridge guy who got his experience at the B-Side.   Andreas knows him and most of the guys who work the bar since he spent a large chunk of his early 30s at the B-Side.  It immediately got a great crowd at the bar, and even at the restaurant. We’d been there for dinner about 2 years ago, and I remember not loving the menu.  Well, things have changed at the grill!

Andreas used his connections with Dylan to get us a table pretty much right when we got there.  The dining room is nicely separated from the bar, so it’s quiet and easy to converse.  The guys had some micro-brewed beer and Kristin and I opted for a glass of a really nice Grenache – Grenache, Fenestra True Red Lot #21.  We ordered a couple of appetizers – grilled calamari with fennel puree, pine nuts & parsley and braised pork short rib with green papaya salad.  The serving was enough for each of us to have a nice bite.  Both were delicious.  It’s a nice change to have grilled calamari as opposed to the breaded and fried rings we usually get.  The meat was falling of the bone of the rib, and the papaya salad was a really nice touch.

For dinner, I stayed in the pork family and got the braised pork shoulder with red wine & rosemary, creamy mascarpone polenta.  Oh my goodness, was this yummy.  I try about once a month to make creamy polenta and always end up with stiff tasteless polenta. This stuff was the bomb.  I finished every morsel on my plate.  So much for my eating healthy lifestyle.  I just couldn’t help myself!

Andreas got the grilled swordfish special and was strong-willed enough to not clean his plate.  Kristin got the red wine braised chicken with mashed potato and was very happy with her dish.  Chris got the always-pleasing bacon double cheeseburger that came with this delicious looking homemade chips.

We finished off dinner with the cheese plate which was lovely. All in all, it was a fantastic dinner, and I will not hesitate to go back there again.
